Our Story
Hi! I'm Katie. I've spent my whole career developing outdoor experiences for universities, high schools, day and sleepaway camps, faith communities and private groups. I love the playfulness, creativity and connection that naturally bubbles up from time in nature, alone or with those you love.

I started Big Bear Travel Co. to make the outdoors more accessible and enjoyable for folks with limited time, experience, local knowledge, access to equipment, etc. Big Bear trips are perfect for those who desire an authentic experience where they can develop a true connection to a natural area and local culture while building new skills at an enjoyable pace.

I am a two-time graduate of Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. Go Mountaineers!! I hold a bachelors in Recreation Management and a masters in Student Development with a focus in Outdoor Programs Administration. I have lived and worked all over including: New Hampshire, North Carolina, Oregon, Wisconsin, Utah and New Zealand.
Asheville, NC is home. You can often find me lazily floating down the French Broad River with my Doberman Shepherd, Maple, or riding my bike around town in search of snacks!

Philosophy
I believe the outdoors is for everyone. I've seen so many folks thrive outdoors despite being told they don't have what it takes. To those gatekeeping outdoor spaces and experiences I say-- move aside, we don't have time for that! And, to those who have been told they don't fit or belong, I shout-- WELCOME!!
From picnicking to hiking, rock climbing and relaxing in a hammock, there's something for you out there. Our precious natural spaces are everyone's responsibility to protect and birthright to enjoy.
